  • Ginseng is a very valuable and expensive herb. There are many varieties of Ginseng :-

    • Korean Ginseng :-
      It is on the 'Heaty' side.

    • Japanese Ginseng :-
      It is on the 'cooling' side.

    • American and Canadian Ginseng (Western Ginseng) :-
      It is strengthening.

    • Wild Ginseng from the mountains of Jilin in China :-
      It is neutral.

    • Wild Mountain Ginseng :-
      This grew naturally.

    • Cultivated Ginseng :-
      It is grown from the seeds of Wild Mountain Ginseng. It takes 6 to 10 years before the Ginseng is ready for harvesting.

    • Seedings of Wild Mountain Ginseng :-
      These are initially cultivated. When the seedings are stronger they are replanted in the mountains.

    • White Ginseng :-
      Ginseng processed with rock sugar or honey.

    • Dark Red Ginseng :-
      It is steamed & processed.

    • Sun-Dried Ginseng :-

  • Value of Ginseng

    1. It is an energy-booster. It nourishes the blood, soothes and settles, improves clarity of vision and strengthens the internal energy or 'qi'.

    2. Recent research into Ginseng indicates that Ginseng can help to prevent cancer, slows down the aging process, improves the immuno-status and enhances brain power. A researcher from an Amercian University who conducted an experiment on cancer cells stated that extracts of Ginseng placed on some cancer cells killed the cells. A professor from Fuji University in Japan believes a certain component in Ginseng improves the immune system and prevents cancer growth, especially stomach cancer.

    3. Swedish researchers who conducted an experiment on students found that those given Ginseng begore their exams performed very well.

    4. Russian academicians found that night-shift workers who took Ginseng made fewer mistakes on the job. Ginseng has the distinctive ability to invigorate and enhance brain power so Russian astronauts often chew Ginseng.

    5. British medical doctors reported that old men who had been taking Ginseng over a period of time developed rosier complexions, their skin glow and their hair turned darker.

    6. Japanese doctors discovered significant improvements in diabetics who had taken Ginseng for a period of time.

    7. Ginseng can reduce cholesterol and prevent hardening of the arterial walls.


  • Ways to prepare Ginseng

    1. Steamed :
      Slice Ginseng and soak overnight in an appropriate amount of cold water. Double-boil for an hour with red dates.

    2. Double-boiled with chicken:
      Soak Ginseng in some water for a few hours. Bring it to the boil, lower the heat and simmer for an hour. After that, double-boil it with chicken.

    3. In powder form:
      Slice the Ginseng and ground it into powder. Gulp it down with some water.

    4. Chewed raw:
      Slice the Ginseng and chew it raw.

    5. Made Ginseng in a wine:
      Soak Ginseng in white rice wine.
